REPRESENTATION

Bernard is a busy QC undertaking cases of the utmost seriousness and sensitivity at all levels.

He is sought after as a strong and persuasive advocate known for an ability swiftly to identify the issues in a case and the best strategy for delivering the best prospects for success.

He is regularly instructed in for the defence in cases involving vulnerable witnesses or clients, cases involving expert evidence and cross-examination of experts and cases of sensitivity or high publicity.

Whilst he undertakes the full range of criminal work at all levels both nationally and internationally, he has a particular interest in cases involving allegations of homicide or serious violent offending, serious sexual offending, terrorism, serious organised crime (including modern slavery and drug trafficking) and cases involving regulatory offences.

Bernard is also a respected advocate in Inquests and is instructed for in cases involving sensitive issues and for those often overwhelmed by the complexity of inquests and their procedure.

ADVICE

Bernard is regularly instructed to advise on cases involving convictions in which he was not trial advocate but where individuals are concerned the safety of their convictions and wish to pursue the matter to the Court of Appeal and beyond, the European Court of Human Rights or the Criminal Cases Review Commission.

He is also instructed to provide opinions on legal issues in criminal law, procedure and evidence both in England & Wales and internationally.

He has advised in overseas jurisdictions on questions of English Law and also on drafting of court rules in Jamaica.

TRAINING & EDUCATION

Bernard provides training to legal and other professionals on a range of subjects, in particular around advocacy, conflict management and resolution and strategic planning.

He has a wealth of experience in training generally and is regularly asked to train those who themselves wish to become trainers.

He has been engaged on many occasions to devise and deliver courses for institutions, companies or firms. He works collaboratively to provide the right course for the client. He has a wide range of co-trainers upon whom he can call to assist him in delivering these courses.
